EDWARDS
HEAT TREATING SERVICE In
1954, Si Edwards sold the heat treating business that he started in 1925 to two of his
partners. It had long been Si's dream to start another heat treating business from
scratch, with all brand new electric atmosphere furnaces in a brand new building where the
equipment could be placed in the most convenient locations. That dream, which was shared
by sons Don and Bill, became a reality in early 1956, when the plans were finalized and
furnaces were purchased and Edwards Heat Treating Service became a California corporation.
The first heat treating job was entered on the books in October 1956. Sadly, in February
1961, Si Edwards passed away.
After 16 years in the 7,200 square foot building, additional space and
equipment was needed; so in 1972, Don and Bill bought a 3/4 acre lot in a raw industrial
area and laid out the plans for a 13,000 square foot building. Bill's son, Lee, joined he
family business at this time to help in the awesome task of moving. Over the years, more
furnaces and equipment were added and upgraded and now total 17 units and their related
equipment.
Edwards Heat Treating is located just 2 miles from the Oakland
International Airport and a half mile from Interstate 880. This convenient location allows
them to draw customers from all over Northern & Central California, Western Nevada and
Southern Oregon.
Edwards has been a proud member of the Metal Treating Institute since
1963. As a member, one of the most important and rewarding aspects, from our point of
view, is the ability to meet together, discuss and swap ideas with heat treaters from all
over the world. Very seldom has one of us come home from a meeting without some new idea
to save money, a safer procedure or a better way to deal with governmental regulations.
E.H.T. is a small company with only ten employees, but those ten
account for over 248 years of heat treating experience. Specialties include close
tolerance case hardening, induction heating and the heat treatment of tool steels.
Customer companies range from small tool & die shops to large ones such as United Air
Lines, Alaska Airlines, Aerojet and Peterbilt. Plastic mold dies, cotton picking spindles,
gears and springs of all sizes and shapes, and metal forming roll dies are some of the
various parts that are routinely heat treated at Edwards.
Si Edward's legacy was to give the customer "what he wants, when
he wants it and at a price that is fair and reasonable to both" is still very much in
effect today. Due to Si's imagination, dedication and inspiration, the Company slogan will
remain:
